I find it a little crazy when I hear that major brands are selling their coaching programs at $40,000 price tags. Which is fine if you are selling to $40,000 rooms. But unfortunately that is not always the case.

A few years ago, I attended a two-day event held by a major brand and on day two the brand started upselling the new package that had a $40,000 price tag on it. It really shook the room to its core. Frankly, because the room was full of Level 1 & Level 2 women entrepreneurs. And the event was geared to those levels. As I was getting on the elevator to head back to my room, many of the women were noticeably upset. They felt sad and angry by the over the top offer. I believe that the offer that day hurt the brand and didn’t elevate it.

The next day I overheard that the brand was upset because the package barely sold at all.

This is what I learned from the experience:

  • Know Thy Room. It is out of integrity to sell to a room that clearly can’t afford it.
  • It is an honor to have people support your brand so be mindful to honor them as well.
  • Upselling is a business tactic that is literally hurtingthe coaching and consulting world. It removes the trust in the room and has made the marketplace weary of attending events. And that has impacted the entire industry.

Building a brand takes time, and loosing trust in a brand only takes a few minutes. Show up in business with integrity and know thy room.
